The Best Fried Food in Southern USA!

In April 2017 Patrick and I embarked on a road trip through America's deep south, half with the intention of hunting down the most Spanish moss-covered trees (me) and half with the intention of eating as much southern food as we could (me and Patrick). Below are some of our favourite fried delights from the trip!
1. Nashville, Tennessee: Biscuit Love (biscuitlove.com)
My desire to try American biscuits, as opposed to English biscuits, and extensive research led me to Biscuit Love. It also led many, many other people to Biscuit Love too, because the queue wound all the way down the street. Luckily, the restaurant is big and the biscuits quick to make, so we only had to wait about half an hour for the hottest biscuit place in the state.
Not only do they serve savoury biscuits with fried chicken and gravy, but they also serve mini fried versions stuffed with lemon mascarpone and served in a pool of blueberry compote. Yes!

2. New Orleans, Louisiana: Beignets at Cafe du Monde (www.cafedumonde.com) and Loretta's Pralines (lorettaspralines.com)
You can't NOT have beignets when you come to New Orleans. We initially felt like we had to go for the famous beignet joint, Cafe du Monde. It opened in 1862 and is literally open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!! They were good, but then we discovered something even better...
Loretta's Authentic Pralines sells the city's famous pralines, just like many other stores downtown...but what sets it apart from the rest is its AMAZING praline-butter-filled beignets! We are talking a whole different level of beignets, here. Find it in the French Market.

3. Charleston, South Carolina: pulled pork, mac and cheese, fried chicken or nachos at Home Team BBQ. (hometeambbq.com)
Wow. Wow is all I can say about this place. This place knows how to do southern food. We went for a very generous serving of pulled pork, a huge tray of nachos, with mac and cheese, cornbread and collard greens on the side.

4. BONUS: Beignets in Washington, DC at Founding Farmers (www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/)
Not actually in the deep south, but still serving up southern-style comfort food despite originating in North Dakota. A friend who lives in Washington DC tipped us off to Founding Farmers, a restaurant owned by over 47,000 thousand farmers who are all members of the North Dakota Farmer's Union. It's now got such a good reputation, if you try to visit without booking a table you might as well just go home. Luckily, we did, and were treated to the most delicious corn bread, pot pies and beignets with not one but THREE different flavours of dipping sauce. You can tell by my unfortunate face in the photo below that I was impressed.
