Sintra is not the most understated place. It's famous for its selection of palaces built in an, erm, unique style. There's Pena Palace, a primary-coloured Disney castle on steroids refurbished by King Ferdinand II from the remains of a monastery. There's Quinta de Regaleira, an adult's adventure playground full of follies, turrets and caves to hide in. And there's Monserrate Palace, built in an ornate Indian style, a hidden gem away from the crowds. Here are my favourite photos from all three palaces!
