Warsaw in a Weekend - Pierogi Tips!

Tempted by £20 Ryanair flights from Cologne to Warsaw, we spent 48 hours in Warsaw, mostly - let's be honest here - hunting for the best pierogies in town based on some extensive pierogi-based research.
If you've never tried them, here are the important details. Pierogies can come in two varieties: fried or steamed. They are dumplings filled with either a savoury or sweet filling, the most common being potato, ground meat or cheese. They're small, so it's common to get a plate of up to 10 of them when you order them in Warsaw.
But where to order them?
Best for sweet pierogies: Zapiecek
I still have dreams about the pierogies I had at Zapiecek. This place has a huge reputation so fills up very quickly. We went for breakfast to beat the lunchtime rush. I ordered boiled pierogies, half with a blackcurrant filling and half with a strawberry one, served with generous amounts of smooth vanilla sauce. Every bite was heaven. They also serve sweet dumplings with cheese, apple & cinnamon, and poppy seeds & raisins.

Best for savoury pierogies: Goscienec
Again, I'm hopeless when it comes to choosing one flavour, so Goscienec gives you the chance to order a mixed batch of flavours such as bacon, cheese, spinach, cheese, potato and pork. These are fried with a topping of fried bacon, butter, or - my favourite - sour cream. You can also order the same flavours in boiled dumpling form, as well as other traditional Polish dishes.

We then managed to explore Warsaw's colourful old town fuelled by the most delicious pierogies in the area!
